project background

This project visually represents the findings of the paper Air quality– related health damages of food published to the scientific journal The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS). It contains information regarding the number of deaths associated with different forms of agriculture and further stratifies this information based on specific agricultural products, different types of pollution, and various methods of measurement. It also offers the estimated impact on deaths that different solutions may have.

This project was very ideation-intensive. It included a lot more sketching than most that I do, and the individual sketches also required a lot more time and thought. This is due to the fact that this project needs to communicate several layers of dense scientific information in an intuitive way such that it is accessible to the layman. As such, you will see that I ended up with a lot of sketches during my journey to the final product.

the process

The first portion of this project was focused on collecting examples and researching the fundamentals of information design. This was a crucial step as it was extremely important to understand how multiple layers of information can be communicated in a single design.

After establishing an understanding of information design, I began creating sketches that explored different means of communicating the information relevant to my piece. The first batch of sketches were heavily exploratory and were mostly black and white.
