project background

This project visually depicts the scale upon which animals within the animal agriculture industries are killed and compares it to the annual death toll of humans in order to help contextualize the data. One death is considered equivalent to one mile, and this value is used to approximate the distance from the Earth that each category would therefore be. The information used is pulled from 2019 FAO data which can be found here.

process

After obtaining the primary data underpinning this project, I had to figure out how best to depict the differences in scale between the categories. I experimented with different approaches such as proportionally scaling images of cows, humans, pigs, etc. up or down depending on the amount of deaths in their category. Ultimately, I landed on the solar system solution shown here. This is because it allowed me to communicate the scale of the deaths and the differences in numbers between each category whilst still being most immediately intuitive to read.

Although in the final design direction each death equals one mile, I did try out different values such as one death equaling one millimeter, centimeter, foot, ten miles, etc. I decided on this direction because it not only felt easier to understand but also encompassed the right amount of the solar system. Other values had the rocket ships going too far out to reasonably depict or did not occupy enough space to justify showing all of the planets.
